“You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.”

Salt adds flavour to food and is useful for preserving food. Salt changes things. Just like salt makes something different, believers are called to live different. Read the following scripture.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

Romans 12:2 (NLT)

When you become a christian, you are called to live a different life than the one you lived before. Jesus calls you to be like salt! But what happens if you lose your saltiness? The Message version of Matthew 5:13 puts this very plainly - “If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness?”

If you don’t act like who you have been called to be, and you lose your saltiness, then you’re not going to be very effective.  While your actions are not what saves you (you are saved by God’s grace), they reveal the change that has occurred within you, and they point other people to Jesus.

Here are some simple ways that you can be salt, pointing people to Jesus:

  • Choosing to be patient in frustrating situations.

  • Forgiving those who have done you wrong, instead of harbouring bitterness and anger.

  • Focusing your attention on Jesus instead of on your circumstances, resulting in you knowing his joy and his peace.

These are just a few examples - I’m sure you can think of many more! But in all of these things, we are being like salt because we are choosing to live differently than than other people do. Others may not show forgiveness, they may not choose to be patient, they might not be content in their current circumstance, but you can because you are connected to the source - Jesus. When you act differently, when you choose to be salt, others will wonder why and you can point back to Jesus.
