There is no five step process or drastic measure to take in order to live in gratitude. It is simply a choice. And the best part is that these joyful, beautiful, worthy of noticing common moments already reside within your existing life. How encouraging is that?
Stop and think for a minute about what you absolutely could not live without. My guess is that your first thoughts may be of material or consumable nature? Okay, that’s valid. Now that you’ve acknowledged those needs, dig deeper. What else? Think beyond to the common day to day happenings and the small joys that surprise you even amongst routine. What gives your heart the kind of grace and happiness that is unexpected and simple, yet leaves a mark on your mood for the better? If I were to answer this I’d say coming home to a clean house after a busy day, taking an evening walk with my fiancé and our dog the first time it’s warm and light enough come spring, or bear hugging a loved one I haven’t seen in a while. The point being, there is so much good in what I refer to as the common, if you’re open to it.
Consistent intentional practice of this mindset turns into a subconscious habit over time. Be patient and kind to yourself. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in comparison and stress. When you step back and really look around at the blessings in your life, it’s a reality check that can lift a great weight off of your heart. Gratitude is powerful. It’s the quickest and surest way to oust any doubt, worry or negativity. It can turn a mundane day into a meaningful day.
Every single day contains something to be grateful for. We must stop waiting for the highs, and writing everything off when the lows hit. Life is a balance. And your life is happening all the time, not just on the best and worst of days. The common days are what fill up most of our lives. Once you realise this, it’s easy to gain perspective on how much you’re missing if you let them pass by without thought or wish them away for what’s next. When life gets crazy busy, I find myself craving a common weekday when all I do is go through my daily routine. There’s beauty in that darn routine! I find gratitude in having it.
As a society we tend to only focus on the highs and lows in our lives, but what about all the in-between? There is so much in-between. Why not put it on a pedestal and embrace the beauty it has to offer? Give it a shot. You won’t be disappointed.
